Who are these people?
There's enough versatility and talent in this band to
stun a herd of oxen. To wit:
Sammy Kayes, acoustic & electric bass
Sammy Kayes plays bass with the WND? Jazz Ensemble, but tries to play just about every other musical instrument with varying levels of success. At merely 22 years old, he has already dedicated his life to performing, teaching, and writing music. Oddly enough, he would sooner be called an artist than a musician... but most people call him Sam, or occasionally, Funk Machine.
Nicholas Furtado, electric guitar
Nicholas was born and raised in a musical family in Bengalur India and has been playing the guitar for 30 yrs. In South India, he toured with his band Stylus and served as faculty at the Bengalur School of Music. Around the turn of the Millineum he studied jazz improv at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. In his spare time he plays the Lautenmusik of J. Dowland, SL Weiss , and JS Bach; and has a passion for Child Health.
Larry Glenzer, trumpet & flugelhorn
Larry Glenzer grew up in the foothills of
Appalachia, born into a family of extremely poor investment bankers. He did not
find his niche musically until much later in life, around his 50th birthday (he
has a rare genetic condition that makes him permanently appear 25 years old).
Glenzeris an accomplished horn player. Note here he displays a smooth, yet burnished soloing
style.
Bryan Kyrouac, tenor saxophone
One of the newest additions to the Who Needs Dave ensemble, Bryan is excited to explore his jazz chops with the WND Ensemble.
Dave Newcorn, piano
Dave Newcorn has been playing piano for 20 years, and is proud to be one of the founding members of the WND Jazz Ensemble, and even happier to have the privilege to play with a group of really talented musicians. Rather than dazzle listeners with technique, Dave tries to focus his solos on rhythmic and tonal explorations. Still, he will hold onto that day job a little while longer.
Gary Barkov, drums
Barkov, a founding member of the WND Jazz Ensemble, has played drums for over 25 years since his days
growing up in Philadelphia. He’s been in
Chicago since 1986 and has most recently worked with the
Chicago-based hard rock band R&R (a.k.a. Menace,
a.k.a. Big Block Chevy) and
Chicago/Cleveland-based experimental music ensemble of
Death on a Stick (a.k.a. Litany of Garbage).
Here he showcases his more sophisticated side
while demonstrating his versatility.
